Stray Thoughts on California Culture
AlterNet ran a quick-hitter I wrote this week on the General McChrystal story. That gave me a chance to consider Rolling Stone's kinship with Ramparts. I didn't include the fact that RS's cover design (see photo) still retains elements borrowed from Mother Ramparts.

I teach California Culture at San Francisco State University. My books include "A Bomb in Every Issue: How the Short, Unruly Life of Ramparts Magazine Changed America" and "American Prophet: The Life and Work of Carey McWilliams." I also acquire and develop books for the University of California Press. Before that, I was the founding editorial director at PoliPointPress, an editor at the Public Policy Institute of California, and an associate professor of English at the University of North Texas. I chaired the California Studies Association from 2008 to 2011.
