Stray Thoughts on California Culture
I borrowed this term from Harold Bloom to describe the effect Carey McWilliams has had on some California writers, academics, and pundits. I just saw a clear expression of that anxiety in this week's issue of The Nation. After reading Gogol, Isaac B. Singer asked, "How is it possible that this man who lived a hundred years before me has stolen so many of my ideas?"

I teach California Culture at San Francisco State University. My books include "A Bomb in Every Issue: How the Short, Unruly Life of Ramparts Magazine Changed America" and "American Prophet: The Life and Work of Carey McWilliams." I also acquire and develop books for the University of California Press. Before that, I was the founding editorial director at PoliPointPress, an editor at the Public Policy Institute of California, and an associate professor of English at the University of North Texas. I chaired the California Studies Association from 2008 to 2011.
